1. Place a Shiva Ling in the north-east direction of the house on Mahashivratri.
2. Keep the house clean and decorate it with lights, flowers, and rangoli.
3. Offer prayers to Lord Shiva and chant Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra.
4. Donate clothes, food and other items to the needy.
5. Wear all white clothes and smear your forehead with vibhuti.
6. Fast for the entire day and break it at night.
7. Avoid non-vegetarian food and alcohol on the day of Mahashivratri
